Fighting Nilgai

Shortly before Thanksgiving 2006, King Ranch Wildlife Biologist Justin Feild was traveling through the Roberto Pasture at the Norias Division when he came upon two nilgai fighting. He estimated one bull at 650 lbs and the other at over 700 lbs. Justin got out of his truck and approached to within about 40 feet and watched them for about 20 minutes snapping pictures until one pinned the other and the loser ran away. Nilgai fight using their necks as one bull attempts to pin the other to the ground. In a couple of the photos the back end of the opponent is completely off of the ground. If you look closely in one of the photos a bull has a cut on his neck from the other’s horns. Although the horns can cut the skin, typically the horns don’t cause much damage with this type of fighting due to the thickness of the hide around the neck. Justin said the vibrations from their fighting could be felt through the ground  and the only sounds to be heard were the snorting of the contestants.
